Thank you for reading pmStudent.com!  Today I would like to ask for your voice on a topic of concern to project managers.  What impacts on project management (in particular) have you seen from the state of the economy?

Just 2 questions…where in the world are you from and the main question. Thanks in advance for participating! I will publish a summary on pmStudent.com later on with some of the highlights and findings.

If that didn’t work, click here.

  • Josh,

I'm in Louisville, KY as you know, :) and I think that the economy has put the brakes on a lot of hiring opportunities in the area. We have 7 LouisvillePMers who have listed on their profiles that they are unemployed and one of my goals for 2009 is to figure out ways to get every member working again.

That being said, the biggest project in Louisville: the new downtown arena is still on track for a 2010 completion. :) I'm in the process of setting up a "listening station" on FriendFeed to collect all the news around that project. More to come. :)

I live in the Washington DC area, and the huge government expenditures are being touted as a boon for Project Managers. Unfortunately, they are 1) slow to begin since federal money is wrapped in miles of red tape, and 2) concentrated around the government centers, primarily Washington DC.
Also 3) since there are many thousands of projects that are under military or intelligence agencies, a majority of new government jobs require security clearance...which limits candidates almost exclusively to ex-military.
But all that said, there is a big push to use federal power and funds to kick start projects, which all need management. So even though companies are in "deep hibernation" with their money and projects, the feds are trying to bring them out. There is hope.
  • Hi Josh,

Great idea for a survey. I've already given some feedback, but you got me thinking about how project managers should view the current state of the economy. I've given my two cents worth at Who's Afraid Of The Big Bad Economy? and went in to more depth than I did in the survey!

    I am from India.

I see a lot of projects getting shelved esp the ones involving high investment like petrochemicals and down stream projects.

This has lead to pink slips for the people in top management esp those who have been hired for their expertise post retirement. This is bound to have a domino effect down the line
