Often we rely on HR to help staff projects. On big integration projects, HR is critical to finding the right talent to lead programs to complete. Project management is a discipline, where as HR is a function. Does HR play a strategic role in your organization to help staff programs?

In terms of succession planning, it seems to me that companies are narrowly focused on the candidates' ability to do the job at hand, and not enough on trying to understand what their long-term career goals are. Do they even have any long-term career goals?

I like asking the question "where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years". You can tell a lot about a person based on the answer you receive. Have they even thought about it? If so, do they want to move up or stay in the same position? If they want to stay in the same position, are they just saying that because they think it's what you want to hear?

Interesting stuff...
