A while back I wrote a post asking “What Have You Done For You Lately?” Career development is a journey, not a destination.
It’s important for you to not only hone your project management skills, but also related skills….technical, business, etc.
I’ve used Telelogic DOORS a bit for requirements management and established a relationship with the company a while back. We had a really smart guy doing requirements management on my last project and he was the DOORS expert, but I always like to know enough about what my team is doing so I can understand their needs and ask the right questions. I did a lot of self-education on the DOORS tool including playing around with it myself to understand its use and capabilities.
Telelogic is now IBM, and they have some free webinars I wanted to let you know about.
Here are the titles of some of their upcoming webinars:
- Quality Assurance Begins with Requirements
- Achieving FSAM compliance using a tools-based approach
- Key New Integrations for Synergy and Change
- Taming the Challenge of Complexity with Systems Engineering Best Practices
- Connecting Business and Development via Focal Point, Change and Synergy
I registered for “Taming the Challenge of Complexity with Systems Engineering Best Practices”. Hopefully they will offer a lot of great content and it won’t be a huge sales pitch. I really doubt it will be a sales pitch all the way through.
Check it out and register for one that looks interesting to you.

DOORS, I Love, I mean HATE, oh yea LOVE DOORS.
Good stuff Josh. DOORS is our standard as well. I’m not on that side anymore, but requirements traceability to the IMP/IMS Work Package deliverables is still in our area.
Thanks for the reminder, I’ll use it to refresh all the reasons DOORS is our tool of choice, while still maintaining the love/hate relationship – just like MSFT Project
Ah yes. I too have a love/hate relationship with DOORS.
I’m not using it now though, so I’m free. FREE!
Josh, If only NASA were so generous with our project. But then would we replace it with?
Ah, it’s not because they’ve switched tools…it’s because I’m no longer working there! Even though I loved the job, I resigned and am fully focused on helping people through pmStudent.com and related activities.

Is there any free tool to trace requirements? I don’t have any budget to introduce something like this in my company, but I would like to ease my superiors in and show them the benefits to get some funding for a commercial tool.
Any suggestion?
Luca, there are a few free ones here. I don’t have experience with any of them, but you could certainly check them out.
