Landing a role as a trainee project manager is hard at the best of times. However I personally think it's not a bad time to shift yourself into a junior project manager role if you are ambitious and have been smart enough to learn how successful project manager's operate where you work. The simple reason is that companies are currently extremely reluctant to take on even experienced new people on as project managers.

However if you are already working for the company and can demonstrate the right skills ie management, leadership and technical ability then it is highly likely you can wangle yourself into a PM role where you already work. Certainly I know of 3 people just at the company I'm currently consulting at who have managed just that in the past 3 months, so it definitely can be done!

Just don't expect anyone to hand you this opportunity on a plate. You need to go out and make it happen.

I especially like the advice about being crystal clear on what type of consultant you want to be, which niche you want to target. Thanks Lisa!
