You're absolutely right in saying that experience is the best way to become an expert. And the only way to experience management is to become an assistant to one. Just be a good student, people may wanna help you but you have to be humble to become a good student. Having lunch with these so called experts is a great idea too. Another suggestion is go wherever he goes (if possible), this way you'll know the ins and outs.
