Thanks for the link! Long article, but I focused 100% on it and didn't multitask all the way through. :-)

While this particular piece appears to be primarily focused on teens, the research is applicable to a wide range of demographics, including those on our project teams.

I enjoyed the part about "highly practiced skills" versus action planning or deep thought. Action planning "thoughts" can only be done one at a time, while executing actions or percieving the world around you can be done simultaneously, at least task switching happens so fast that it appears simultaneous.

As for music, the research I've come across makes a distinction between instrumental music versus music with vocals. I've never seen it studied, but I imagine that well-known music with vocals might be closer to not interfering because the brain already knows the lyrics and trying to interpret them any longer.

There was an interesting point in the Times article about Brodmann's Area 10 in the brain which controls task switching and how it is less effective for very young children and people over 60.

All the research I know of, including the studies cited in this article and the one in my post, support the hypothesis that multitasking impacts performance and quality negatively. This is true of youngsters who seem to be wizards at multitasking too.

I applies to our project teams too!
