A Primavera P6™ endeavor (continued)

by Travis K. Anderson, MBA, PMP

I give our P6 instructors, Mike and Mario, a five star performance rating. They were outstanding. I was thoroughly impressed with their knowledge of the fundamental project management concepts as well as their skill in using the P6 application. Mike and Mario were always on task, ever willing to receive on the fly questions, and continuously on the ball with the potential solutions for how P6 could make our lives better as project stakeholders. In the training courses, I learned that Primavera is properly aligned with PMI and the project management life cycle, Initiate, Plan, Execute, Control, and Closure. Also, P6 is designed to take the failure out of projects.

The web feature called “My Primavera” is both effective and efficient for establishing dashboards, schedule development, collaboration, resource management, and facilitating communication. Projects that have virtual team members can utilize this feature. With plenty of customization features, “My Primavera” gets two thumbs up from me.

The web portion of P6 is great, but it is the Project Management Client application that holds all the power. Super users, as they are called, have administrator rights to establish security permissions and enterprise development. Super users develop and maintain via the client an enterprise project structure (EPS), organizational breakdown structure (OBS), and work breakdown structure (WBS). This is where Primavera P6™ goes beyond the project and to the portfolio and program level. Users of the client application can accurately import and export data easily with just a few clicks. This system can eat MSP files for breakfast. Within a few hours, (1800) lines of MSP were imported and ready for operations. I guess the training really paid off.
